Time to Spring-Clean YOUR Website!

Time to Spring-Clean YOUR Website!

Sunday 20th March was the official beginning of springtime in the UK and it's time, at long last, to say goodbye (and good riddance!) to the long, cold winter. A longstanding tradition is the good old spring clean and it's not only homes and workplaces that need it: your website could also benefit from a good going over.

In this edition of the Brickweb blog, we'll be giving you some great tips on how to spring-clean your website and get it in tip-top shape.

The first thing to do is to start getting rid of old, tired and outdated content. Go through all of the images, text, videos and other elements of your site and remove anything that is no longer relevant, such as details of past promotions and products that you no longer have in stock. You should also check that all of your product prices and descriptions are current.

It's also important to make sure that all of the links on your site are in proper working order. Your website may be functioning in terms of people using it successfully with transactions going through but it's crucial to check every part of the site that visitors may want to use to carry out research or just browse. As you add new links and pages over time, it's easy to let the site become cluttered and disorganised, damaging the user experience. The easiest way to check for bad links is to use your sitemap, clicking each link to make sure it takes you to the right page.

You then need to get your website bang up to date. Perhaps you have a 'coming soon' section that references a product or promotion that has already been and gone. Maybe the last news or blog article you published was months or even years ago. Seemingly small details like this can have a massive effect on how visitors perceive your site and, by association, your company as a whole. It's not just your clients that will notice outdated content: search engine algorithms will too and will penalise you for it, negatively affecting your ranking.

Check out your competitors as it's likely that they will be doing some spring cleaning too. Have a look at their websites and learn lessons from what they're up to. You can learn from what they do well and also from their mistakes.

Take some time to perfect your email database; email marketing is a highly-effective marketing tool so it should be optimised. Customers love personalised marketing so it's a great idea to segment your contact list. Think about each customer's relationship with your business (new customers, previous customers, specific interests etc) and segment accordingly.

Make a start on all of the things you have been putting off. Before you do so, create a to-do list; writing down the major points will help you to visualise and then materialise your goals. Work through the list methodically, enjoying the sensation as you cross each one off!
