The Brick Factory: All About Embroidery

The Brick Factory, our groundbreaking business automation tool for companies working in the fast-paced custom merchandise sector, is set to once again feature prominently in the Printwear & Promotion journal.

As well as showcasing the many e-commerce platforms with which The Brick Factory can be seamlessly integrated (including TikTok, Woo, Etsy, eBay, Amazon and Shopify), the article also highlights major customisation processes such as Direct to Garment (DtG), Direct to Film (DtF), cut & sew, screen printing, sublimation and embroidery.

Embroidery is the subject of this edition of the Brickweb blog, as this method of creating custom merch is enjoying rapidly-increasing popularity at the moment.

The earliest examples of fabrics decorated using embroidery were created in China and have been dated all the way back to the 5th century BC. Embroidery has been in constant use ever since to beautify and customise all kinds of items from clothing to furniture.

For millennia, all embroidery was done by hand. That quickly changed in 1832, when Frenchman Josué Heilmann invented the world's first manual embroidery machine. In modern times, the process has become computerised and is used more widely than ever before. As its popularity increases, The Brick Factory is ideally placed to help propel businesses that provide the service to lasting success in the increasingly-competitive field.

Just for fun, let's take a look at some of the times that embroidery has featured in the Guinness Book of World Records...

  • World's Longest Embroidery. We don't have to travel far to find the holder of this record as she is from right here in the UK! Margaret S. Pollard used the ancient technique to craft a piece of embroidery which, depicting several scenes from the stories of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, measures a whopping 407.8 metres in length.
  • World's Largest Embroidery. In terms of area, the largest piece of embroidery in the world measures 29.3 square metres. The creator of the work is China's Liu Yamei, who spent more than three years on the record-breaking project.
  • Most People Embroidering Simultaneously. Also set in China, this record was collectively achieved in 2018 by participants from the Cheongsam Association and Qingdao Elizabeth Medical Consulting Company. No less than 1,307 people worked together at once, embroidering golden stars onto red flags to create many of the country's distinctive flags.
