eCommerce Spending Trends in 2021: New Survey Data

How people shop online is always changing and this has never been more noticeable since the beginning of the Covid pandemic. In this edition of the Brickweb blog, we'll be sharing some of the results of a new survey carried out by Internet Retailing and looking at how these can influence YOUR eCommerce strategy for 2022.

It will probably come as no surprise to learn that almost 70% of survey respondents in the UK said that they are spending less in physical stores and more online since the pandemic. Nearly 20% said that they were spending around the same amount in physical stores but also spending more at internet retailers.

Online shoppers are using social media to find new products, with 54.8% of respondents reporting discovering something new at least once a month on platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok. However, only a small number of people purchased items directly from their social media feed with over 40% visiting the retailer's website to make the purchase.

The shift to mobile continues, with almost 67% of UK respondents saying that they use a mobile device to make a purchase at least once a month. Nearly 18% of those surveyed reported making purchases using a mobile device one or more times each week. Before March of 2020, 38% of respondents preferred using a digital wallet as an online payment method; this figure has since leapt to nearly 46%.

In 2022, it is going to be more important than ever before to invest in multi-channel strategies, bringing together marketing, sales, operation and fulfilment into a cohesive, seamless experience. It will no longer be simply a desire to maintain a strong social media presence and instead will be crucial to success.

The same is true of mobile commerce; a mobile-first strategy is essential. As the usage of digital wallets continues to increase in popularity, eCommerce websites will have to provide these options as payment methods or risk losing customers. The key is to remain agile so that your business is always ready, willing and able to adapt.
