Ecommerce Websites: The Future of Retail
It's a well-known fact that footfall on the UK high street continues to decline. Earlier this year, the Office for National Statistics reported that online sales account for 18.2% of all retail spending, a rise from 16.1% last year.
A new study set out to discover the reasons that more and more people are shopping online instead of on the high street and the results have now been published.
The study, conducted in partnership with YouGov and ParcelLab, took the form of an online survey, gathering the opinions of more than 2,000 consumers in the UK. Broadly speaking, the results of the survey show that retailers on the high street fail to deliver comparable levels of convenience and post-sale service than do their competitors in the online marketplace.
- 60% cited limited product selection on the high street as a frustration
- 51% blamed poor customer service
- 50% of respondents disliked having to queue to pay for or return items
- 56% of millennials (people aged 18-24) preferred online-only retailers
- 60% said that lower prices attracted them to online retailers
